The neighborhood surrounding the Avenue of the Arts is one of Philadelphia’s most desirable areas, as well as a cultural juncture within the city. The Broad and Washington Mixed Use Development was the result of a successful Developer/Architect submission for a key block at the gateway to the Avenue of the Arts in downtown Philadelphia. Designed for phased implementation, the 700,000 SF project included two public plazas; a black box theater; new, high-visibility facilities for the Pennsylvania Ballet; retail along the Broad Street frontage; and, two floors on Washington Avenue designated for offices and exhibit space for arts and cultural groups. The design created two environments: bustling retail, arts and cultural frontage; and quieter, greener settings on the project interior.
